@ About two years ago, this machine was found discarded on the road side, just one block from my house. Almost everything had been stripped from it except the motherboard, which appeared to be in quite good condition. I was returning from my daily walking exercises and, after a quick examination of the unwanted hardware, could not resist carrying it home with me. As it happened, there was an old ATX power supply in my storage, and together with a 1 GB DDR RAM module borrowed from the Dell Inspiron 530, this computer was ready for a test. It sure took me a bit of effort, and finally after executing a CMOS Ram reset on the motherboard I was able to bring it back to life. This machine turned out to be a HP-Compaq-dx2400 , with an Intel Core2 Quad Q6600 2.4 GHz CPU. To make it fully functional, over the following weeks I gradually added some more components, bought from eBay, which included: - 2x 2GB DDR2 RAM modules (for $20) - 1 C-Media CMI8730 PCI audio card (for $15) , (the audio chip on the motherboard did not work) - 1 SATA DVD R/W drive ($5) - 1x NVIDIA GeForce-210 512 MB graphic card (spare taken from the Dell 780 computer) - 1x Samsung 830 mSATA SSD (128 GB) , spare taken from a dead Dell XPS13 laptop. - 1x USB Wifi dongle (RTL8192eu, for $10) For operating system I tried installing Windows XP-Pro from a genuine HP DVD disk in my software collection. It worked fine, and to my surprise, the OS became activated by default,(probably due to the fact that the motherboard was an OEM item). Windows XP-pro runs quite well on this machine, producing a very snappy performance. (Quite impressive in fact, for a piece of hardware that has been thrown away). screen shot of the XP-Pro OS :

@ Jan 2022: * Repartitioned the 128 GB SSD to make room for Linux OS'es. Tried installing various distributions: Manjaro KDE, mxLinux, POP-OS, Fedora 35 KDE .. etc. All had problems of different kinds (such as no driver for graphic card, RTL8192 USB wifi not working ....) * Finally was able to successfully complete a fresh install of Manjaro-KDE on sda2. Got the RTL8192eu wifi dongle to work OK. Next, installed WINE, followed by Photoscape 3.7 and WINMERGE. All worked fine. Feb 2022: * Installed PureBasic 5.72 on Manjaro-KDE by copying the extracted file from an USB . It worked great without having to download any extra libraries as in the cases of other Debian-based distributions. Screenshot of Manjaro-21 KDE: (Manjaro OS only used about 620 MB of RAM memory) Oct 2022: * Installed ZORIN-16 on the 3rd partition of the SSD (sda3). It worked fine, and looked good. @ Feb 2022 * Added a second 120 GB SSD (Western Digital, green WDC). Installed Ubuntu Budgie 21.10 and PepperMint Debian 11 on it. Not able to get RTL8192eu driver installed on U-Budgie for some unknown reason . Had to use the Tenda Wifi dongle for internet connection. * PepperMint 11 looked good, worked fine. Installed WINE in order to run Windows copies of Photoscape 3.7 and WinMerge. However, Photoscape did not work, again not sure why. * Tried SOLUS-Mate distro as well. It had a good presentation, but the Software Center app repeatedly malfunctioned. (US server overloaded, could not update software !). Gave up on it eventually. @ Jan 2023: * Tried to replace the SATA DVD drive with a spare IDE DVD drive, using an IDE-SATA adapter bought from eBay. This failed. * Decided to install a fresh copy of the newly-released Ubuntu-Budgie 22-10 distro on the WDC 120 GB SSD. Selected the default option of "erasing whole disk" during installation. This proves to cause some complications later on, as unbeknown to me the installer app reformatted and created a GPT disk instead of MBR. * Reformated the WDC SSD, and created 3 new ext4 partitions, namely sdb1, sdb2, sdb3 . Then re-installed Ubuntu-Budgie 22-10 on sdb1. This time the installer app complained about not finding an EFI partition, but still completed the task. At this point I was not aware that the WDC SSD still remains a GPT disk (as a result of the previous installation attempt). * The U-Budgie 22.10 release has the same problem with the RTL8192eu wifi USB dongle. The driver software downloaded from rtl8192-linux-master folder failed to install, just like what happened last year with the old U-Budgie 21.10 distribution. * Restored an image of PepperMint 11 taken from the Dell Inspiron 530 machine to the sdb2 partition. This worked fine, except there was a problem during the subsequent online software updates. (Something to do with the new GRUB not being able to proceed with a GPT disk without an EFI partition). I actually have seen this sort of hiccup before on other machines, but did not know what to do with it. * Decided to try converting the sdb (WDC) disk from GPT to MBR by using the gdisk utility . This worked fine without destroying the two Linux distros which have just been installed on sdb1 and sdb2 . There is however one extra step which must be performed afterwards, in order to get into sdb1 and sdb2 again, and that is to boot into Zorin 16 on sda, then run grub-install /dev/sdb* Installed LINUX-LITE 6.2 on sdb3. This distro looked good, worked fine. It has no problem with the rtl8192-linux-master driver for the Wifi dongle . Was able to get QB64 to compile and run OK. Likewise, PureBasic 5.72 was successfully set up, using the usual documented steps. Screenshot of Linux-Lite OS:
