~ @ ~ During a morning walk some 5 years ago, I spotted a discarded computer by the roadside. Although it was badly covered in dirt and stains, I could still see a quality Dell machine, deserving a spot in my garage. So it came home with me. After a good clean-up, this Dell Inspiron showed no sign of life other than the illuminated power-switch and a running fan. Nevertheless, the computer hardware was of professional quality, invoking enough satisfaction just by appearance alone , therefore it stayed wrapped up in my garage. The coronavirus lockdown during 2020 and 2021 has made me much more home-bound than usual. Among other consequences, it opened up an opportunity for me to unwrap the Dell Inspiron. Some more cleaning, more checking and unplugging/replugging of modules happened , and finally as if to reward my effort, the machine displayed a Dell BIOS screen . With the addition of a new lithium battery for the CMOS-Ram and a hard disk, I got myself a fully functioning Dell Inspiron 530 . By the standard of today, this computer has quite old hardware (Dual-core E5200 CPU, and 2G Ram), so I started searching the internet for a light-weight Linux distribution . There are many options to choose from (too many, as a matter of fact), and after trying out a few , I settled on mX-FLuxbox , as well as another interesting Ubuntu-based distribution with a very unlikely name of "Bionic-Dog" . Despite its name, the latter does not run like a dog at all, but actually flies effortlessly on the Dell Inspiron, being very compact (installed entirely on a USB stick, can be booted and copied to RAM, where it runs at top speed) .

Below is a summary of the work that has been done on this machine:
- Added a 2nd-hand 320 GB Seagate hard disk , then installed Windows Vista Home OS from the DVD that was still embedded in the DVD drive of the discarded machine. Worked OK.
- Having never used Vista OS before , I replaced it with XP Professional SP3 . However, could not get the audio working again with XP . Searching the internet for an XP audio driver for this Dell 530 yielded no result. Therefore decided to re-install Vista Home .
- Added a 120 GB SSD disk, and moved Vista OS to this drive .
- Added an old Quadro NVS-285 graphic card (256 MB) to get better screen display . Worked fine with suitable Vista video driver, providing sharp clear graphics.
- Installed POP_OS Linux to dual-boot with Vista (sda2 partition). POP_OS worked ok, but only show low-resolution display. Could not find a Linux video driver for NVS-285 graphic card.
- Replaced POP_OS with MX-Linux Fluxbox (32-bit), which gave better screen resolution, but then most programs (like QB64) would crash while running (screen display frozen), which forced a manual shutdown of whole machine.
- Installed Bionic-Dog (frugal) Linux to co-exist with MX-Fluxbox on the sda2-partition. PureBasic 5.72 and QB64 were already embedded in this Bionic-Dog copy, which was prepared on another computer previously.
- Installed FOSSA-Dog (frugal) Linux to co-exist with MX-Fluxbox on the sda2-partition. However, QB64 could not run without crashing under FOSSA-Dog either. - Installed Antix-21 OS on a third partition (sda3) of the SSD, and used lower resolution (1024x768). Installed and compiled QB64-v2, which worked fine under Antix-21 .
- Installed MX-18 32-bit Linux OS on the Seagate 320 GB hard disk, then tried to run QB64 . It froze . Definitely, a better graphic card was needed .
- Replaced the NVS-285 with AMD Radeon-5570 (1GB) graphic card . QB64 ran fine, could successfully compile and run EKING-3v9.BAS , under both MX-Fluxbox and FOSSA-Dog OS.
- However Vista did not work well with the new graphic card. Had to search and download the AMD5570 video driver for Vista.
- Was not impressed with Antix-21, therefore replaced it with Peppermint-11 64-bit (on sda3) .
- Installed PureBasic 5.72 (32-bit version) on MX-Fluxbox . PureBasic 5.72 started up ok, but failed to compile EKING.PB
- Installed PureBasic 5.72 (64-bit version) on Peppermint OS . PureBasic 5.72 worked fine, successfully compiled EKING.

Below are some screenshots of results produced by the E-KING program running under the Bionic-Dog Linux OS on the Dell Inspiron 530:
